Xirokampi

Taygetos foothills, south of Sparta

Xirokampi is a large village on the eastern foothills of Taygetos, a short drive south of Sparta. Stone houses, cafes and tavernas line its streets, and right beside it opens the Anakolos gorge. You can drive into the gorge, but walking it is much nicer: the E4 European path runs through it, past rocks, small waterfalls, chapels and springs.

Near the village an ancient single-arched stone bridge still crosses the Rasina stream, and an open-air stone theatre hosts plays and concerts in summer. From here you can also reach the Zerbitsa Monastery and the abandoned medieval village of Koumousta, with its stone houses and cobbled lanes, and from there the Monastery of Gola.
