Trypi

Entrance of Lagada gorge, 640 m, Sparta-Kalamata road

Trypi is built like an amphitheatre at the mouth of the Megali Lagada gorge, at 640 metres on the old road from Sparta to Kalamata. Cold water from the Vasiloneri and Karvasaras springs runs through it, and its tavernas are known for traditional cooking.

It is the gateway to several sights: the ice-cold pools of the Knakion springs, the ancient cave of Kaiadas just outside the village, and the Lagada climbing park a little further up the road, where the cool gorge makes summer climbing possible.
