Neos Mystras

Mystras, ~6 km W of Sparta

Neos Mystras is the village just below the walls of Byzantine Mystras and the largest one in the area. Flower-filled lanes lead to a square with a statue of Constantine Palaiologos, the last Byzantine emperor, and to the church of Agios Ioannis, whose fountain uses an old Roman sarcophagus.

It is a practical place to stay or eat before or after visiting the castle-city, with hotels, guesthouses and tavernas. Walkers can follow a riverside path from the edge of the village up to the hamlet of Taygeti in about an hour, passing chapels and stone fountains, and continue another two hours to the Faneromeni Monastery. In late May the village hosts the Paleologia festival, and at the end of August a big trade fair.
