This branch of the National Gallery opened in 1982 in an early 20th-century neoclassical mansion in Sparta. It shows 82 works of modern Greek art of the 19th and 20th centuries – painters such as Gyzis, Lytras, Theofilos and Tsarouchis – covering history painting, portraits, symbolism and abstraction.
A small collection of 14 Western European paintings from the 16th to 20th centuries completes the visit, and the gallery hosts temporary exhibitions and educational programmes.
