Chrysafa sits at 550 metres on the western slope of Mount Parnon, north-east of Sparta. It was an important religious centre in Byzantine and later times, and its churches show it.
Just outside the village stands Panagia Chrysafitissa, a late 11th-century church later fortified with a tower, with fine wall paintings. Nearby is the fortress-like Monastery of Agion Tessarakonta, and a scenic road leads on to the small mountain village of Agriani, known for its cool climate, tavernas and forest paths.
