Panagia Chrysafitissa

Just outside Chrysafa

Just outside the village of Chrysafa stands one of the most important Byzantine churches of the area, built at the end of the 11th century. It is a cross-in-square church with a dome on two columns; in the 16th century monks added an outer porch, a cistern and a defensive tower, which give it its fortress look.

An inscription dates its wall paintings to 1289/90 and names the donors, a local official called Michael and his wife Zoe. The paintings in the porch are the best preserved. Tradition says the icon of the Virgin of Monemvasia was miraculously carried there from Chrysafa.
