Sparta's cathedral stands on a rise beside the old courthouse. First consecrated in 1844, it was badly damaged by fire in 1866 and rebuilt in neoclassical style, reopening in 1893.
Inside, the upper wall paintings were made in the 1920s by Stavros Kantzikis and the lower ones in 1952 by Evangelos Mavrikakis, in the style of the Munich School.
