Vamvakou is a 15th-century village on the western side of Mount Parnon, surrounded by forests of fir and black pine. Its central church, with a bronze statue of bishop Theodore II in the courtyard, and a clock tower overlooking the square give it a distinctive look.
Nearby, the cave monastery of Agia Kyriaki is built into the rocks of the mountain. Vamvakou is a good base for the outdoors: two hiking routes add up to 20.5 km, and three mountain-bike routes to 25.5 km. Spring and autumn bring strong colours, and in winter the village is often under snow.
