The Monastery of Gola (Zoodochos Pigi) stands at about 1,000 metres on Taygetos, near the abandoned medieval village of Koumousta, in a forest of fir and chestnut. It existed by 1608, and its church was built or renewed in 1632.
Its wall paintings, by Dimitrios Kakavas (1632) and others (1673), are very well preserved. Unusually, the porch shows ancient Greek figures – Homer, Solon, Thucydides, Plutarch, Aristotle and Plato. Under Ottoman rule the monastery helped pay for local schools. A trail from Koumousta reaches it in about 1.5 hours.
