In an olive grove at Vafeio, south of Sparta, lies the largest Mycenaean vaulted (tholos) tomb in Laconia, 10.2 metres across. It dates to around 1500 BC and was excavated in 1889 by Christos Tsountas.
The dome has not survived, but the tomb is famous for what was found in it: weapons, gold jewellery and the two gold 'Vafeio Cups', masterpieces now in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. It probably belonged to a rich local ruler.
