The Amyklaion is an ancient sanctuary on the hill of Agia Kyriaki near the village of Amykles, south of Sparta. People worshipped here from Mycenaean times: first Hyakinthos, an older local god, and later Apollo Amyklaios.
The sanctuary held a colossal column-like statue of Apollo, set on a remarkable 'throne' built by the architect Bathykles at the end of the 6th century BC. Every year Sparta celebrated the Hyacinthia festival here. Today you see foundations and fragments, with a fine view over the valley.
