On Triakosion Street, in the north-east of Sparta, two monuments sit side by side. One is a domed cross-in-square church from the end of the 10th century, built over Hellenistic and Roman remains.
The other is a late Roman bath complex of the 3rd–4th century AD, with hot, warm and cold rooms and mosaic floors; part of it was used again as a bath house in Byzantine times. With a Byzantine olive press found nearby, they give a picture of the medieval town of Lacedaemonia.
